After installing the FileMaker Pro Server, you can begin adding databases and additional information to existing databases. Directions on how to add databases and update information can be found here.
Installing FileMaker Pro Server
Important: FileMaker Server must be installed locally on Mac OS. You cannot install FileMaker Server over a network.
To install FileMaker Server:
- Insert the FileMaker Server CD into the CD or DVD
drive.
You see the CD window. If you see only the disc icon, double-click the icon to open its window. - Double-click the FileMaker Server 8 installer icon. (graphic of icon)
- Enter your Mac OS authentication passphrase and
follow the on-screen instructions.
You see the FileMaker Server installer dialog box. - Click Install.
- Choose the startup configuration. Click OK.

Select If Automatic You want FileMaker Server to start whenever Mac OS starts. Manual You want FileMaker Server to start only after you start the FileMaker Server daemon using FileMaker Server Admin.
Note: The FileMaker Server Helper daemon is set to automatically start whether you choose Automatic or Manual. The Helper is needed to start the Server daemon from FileMaker Server Admin when FileMaker Server is not set to start automatically.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- When installation completes, you see a Product Registration panel. You can register online, or by letter or fax. After installation, you must either restart the computer or start the FileMaker Server service manually the first time. Thereafter, FileMaker Server will start when you restart the computer.
- After installing FileMaker Server make sure to manually turn the FileMaker Server on by opening FileMaker Server Admin and connecting to the server and starting the server. You must complete this step before installing the rest of the server applications.
